Celebrating World Environment Day
Today, June 5, is World Environment Day. It’s a moment to reflect on how the way we work, innovate, and live each day can help address climate challenges. In today’s context, it’s also important we focus on how we can accomplish climate gains with attractive economics that compel industrial leaders to act.
Hard-to-abate industries such as steel, oil and gas, refining, chemicals, and low-carbon fuels remain essential to modern life. Together, however, they produce up to 50% of global carbon emissions, making decarbonization critical to a more sustainable future. We all want cleaner, greener processes, but these industries operate under real-world constraints that can make it difficult to balance economic and environmental priorities.
Continuous, on-demand operations, tight margins and little tolerance for infrastructure or operational disruptions make energy transformation challenging. That challenge is exactly why I’m proud to lead the Utility Global team. Our team is driving solutions for heavy industry that deliver real significant climate impacts alongside compelling economics – the “win-win” leading global customers in tight margin industries are actively seeking.
This year’s World Environment Day feels especially meaningful because our organization has grown, strengthened its position and is helping shape what comes next for these industries.
Thanks to the work of our team at every level of the organization, H2Gen® offers a commercially available, economic solution that can deliver measurable progress quickly. And we’re building real momentum.
True Economic Industrial Decarbonization
Utility Global is working to balance environmental and economic needs by offering practical pathways to reduce carbon while helping industrial operations stay competitive, reliable and economically sound. We know the right solution must meet industry where it is, with technologies that fit existing systems & assets and deliver results.
These industries have invested trillions of dollars in existing assets with decades of remaining useful life that need to continue delivering value even in a lower carbon world. And with global competition keeping pressure on commodity prices, there is little room for costly solutions.
That is where H2Gen stands apart. The technology uses industrial off-gases to convert water into hydrogen without electricity while also producing a highly concentrated carbon dioxide stream, approaching 98% purity in some applications. In turn, it creates a cost-effective pathway for carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).
H2Gen also integrates with existing industrial infrastructure and processes with one of the smallest footprints on the market, helping operators build on assets that represent decades of investment. With these features, our economics have the potential to approach parity or even beat gray hydrogen cost structures without subsidies at scale while creating economically viable pathways to decarbonize industrial assets without changing, or in some cases meaningfully reducing, the cost to produce their products. Decarbonizing steel and refined products while reducing the cost of those products, without incentives. Utility is proving that it is possible.
By addressing economic and operational constraints head-on, we offer a practical solution businesses can use to move toward their decarbonization goals.
Protecting Heavy Industry While Driving Carbon Out
By turning emissions reduction into an economic opportunity, we can help hard-to-abate industries reduce risk and strengthen resilience.
Steel, oil and gas, refining, chemicals and low-carbon fuels all operate on tight margins in a global market. Many traditional decarbonization technologies are expensive. Success depends on forecasting costs, protecting existing assets and improving current operations.
H2Gen helps companies cut emissions without dramatically increasing production costs. It does that by treating emissions as a resource, utilizing off-gases to convert water into hydrogen while creating potential new revenue streams and improving overall asset efficiency.
We understand the importance of heavy industry to the global economy. These sectors produce essential goods that modern life and create jobs in communities around the world, and employ millions upon millions of people around the globe. That is why we are focused on providing an economic pathway to decarbonization, so companies do not have to choose between sustainability and survival.
Together, we can strengthen industrial competitiveness and advance the energy transition.
For the Next Generation
For me, the work to advance clean technology and move the energy transition forward is deeply personal.
As a father, I think about the future of both our planet and our economy. I am proud that the work we do at Utility Global can help hard-to-abate industries decarbonize in ways that also make them more competitive. Because we should not have to choose between protecting our planet and our cost of living.
I am excited about what the future holds, and I hope we continue building on this progress to create a more sustainable future for the next generation, with practical and economic solutions like Utility can provide. Thank you to our customers, partners, and our amazing employees for your tremendous commitment and partnership in bringing innovative solutions like H2Gen to benefit the industries that we are fortunate to participate in and the planet that we call home.
